MT – Dear One

It was a sad day for the local Brisbane music scene when Yves Klein Blue broke up, not least of which because the break up was compounded by the fact that frontman, Michael Tomlinson, left Aussie shores and headed to London. To be honest, the guy’s awesome, but I wasn’t sure we’d hear him again, this side of the pond.

But turns out the dude’s formed a new band over there, called MT, and they’re all sorts of awesome. Take a listen to their track, Dear One, below.

Canon Logic – Mountain

Yeah, I know we’re going back to 2013 with this one. So what? It’s a cracking tune still… dig it.

You can download the track from the band’s website here, for free. Because they’re cool like that.

Robert Francis – Love is a Chemical

Hard to believe I’ve been writing about Robert Francis for 6 years now, but in that 6 years the dude has totally been writing the soundtrack to my life. So when I heard Robert had dropped out of the music business, shaved his hair and fallen into drugs following the release of Strangers in the First Place back in 2012, it was a major downer.

The good news is, Robert’s back – and looking great. His fourth LP, Heaven, is out June 3 – and here’s your first taste, with the video for “Love is a Chemical”.

MisterWives – Reflections

So when I first heard this tune from MisterWives, I wasn’t all that sure. But at the 45 second mark, as that first chorus kicks in… man, this is one lovable track. Just undeniable, happy pop goodness.

Reflections is off their debut EP of the same name, which came out in Jan this year.

James Bay – Running

I only discovered James Bay about two months ago (thanks to this absolutely wonderful cover of Haim’s “Forever”), but in that two months, I’ve been spinning pretty much everything the guy puts out.

Just last week, Bay released new single, “Running”, on Soundcloud, and I think it just might be my favourite track of his yet. It’s incredibly sincere and initimate, and I guarantee that after a few spins, you won’t be able to resist singing along at the 1.44 mark. Listen below…

Let It Go comes out in the UK on May 13th. No word yet on Australian release, but I’ll keep my ears open.

Raury – God’s Whisper

So this kid, Raury, is 17. And I’m telling you, from everything I’ve heard so far, the kid is just a natural, tidal wave force of music.

I just can’t believe the kid’s 17; there’s something otherwordly – and unstoppable – to this kid. Check him out soon.

FAIRCHILD – Burning Feet

It’s been about two years since I last wrote about FAIRCHILD, and in that time the band has gone through a few changes – not only have they dumped the “Republic” part of their name, but their sound has also grown in leaps and bounds. In my previous write-up, I worried that the group sounded too much like Two Door Cinema Club – but this track, “Burning Feet”, has a sound that’s all FAIRCHILD.

Good work, guys.

Jared & The Mill – Western Expansion

So, I totally slept on these dudes in 2013, but 2014 is seeing me hit Jared & The Mill’s debut album, “Western Expansion”, super hard.

There’s an energy in this album that’s just simply irrepressible, particulary in the opening trio of tracks, “Breathe Me In”, “Returning Half” and “In our Youth”, which – as an album opening – is just crazy strong. The album may lose its way temporarily in the second half, but as a debut album, Western Expansion is really, really exciting. Get on these guys now.
