10 years, and a challenge…

Believe it or not, loyal reader, Burgo’s Music Blog is now in its 10th year. Yes, the “little blog that could” started off in 2007, which is absolutely blowing my mind right now. In that time I’ve had millions of page views, hundreds of comments, and over 500 songs written about on this site.

How the heck do you celebrate something like that?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I’ve done the usual things… created a Spotify playlist of every song ever written about on this site (excluding the ones Spotify doesn’t have in its catalogue of course, which unfortunately turns out to be quite a few); created a “Best of…” retrospective playlist that narrows it down to nearer to the 100 song mark; but none of that seemed quite enough. And I’m painfully aware of the fact that I haven’t written on here for over a year now, which means I have some making up to do.

So, I’ve decided to challenge myself.

I’m going to do a series this year on Burgo’s Music Blog. Every week, I’ll post at least one of the songs on my “Best Of…” playlist (in chronological order of them being posted on this blog originally); but, as I’ve already written about the songs themselves in the original posts, I’m instead going to have to accompany the song with… something.

Something “creative”.

That might take the form of a short story, an essay, or a poem, or a quote, or an image I’ve made. I don’t know, each song will be different.

In short: I’m going to listen to the song, and then post something I’ve created that either speaks to the song itself, or speaks to what the song does to me.

At the end of the series, I’ll then post a link to the full playlists on Spotify, so you can listen from start to end in chronological order. I promise you: it makes for an interesting ride, to see how my musical tastes changed over the decade. In some ways, it’s a very personal reflection of my life.

I don’t know how this is going to turn out. But I’m kind of excited by that. Let’s see.
