If you missed MUTEMATH on today’s “Like A Version” on Triple J, then you missed out on 4 minutes worth of pure, pure music. I know that sounds an obvious statement, but I well and truly mean it. It’s not often these days that you hear pure, unbridled music. And holy shit, I loved it.

This makes me feel alive.

Listen. Love. Support.

So, I have a dirty little confession to make. As embarrassing as this is to admit as a music blogger, it’s been over a year since I last went to a gig. With organising a wedding, buying a house, and changing jobs all in the space of a year, it’s been a lean time for the ol’ wallet… and unfortunately, gigs were one of the luxuries that had to get cut.

So you know it had to be something special that would make me air the moths out of the wallet, and get back on the gig circuit. And that something special was James Vincent McMorrow, performing live at the Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane.

After a year off, I was not disappointed. In fact, in many ways last night was a renewal.

Y’see, Mr McMorrow came out and made me remember everything that I love about live music. There were no pretensions last night. There were no rock-star airs. If anything, dude came off as the humblest of guys. Someone you would love to share a beer with at the bar, laughing as the night grew older and cold winds blew outside.

So no. Here was this incredibly likeable guy up on stage, inviting you in to share his story. And it was bloody awesome.

James live was a relevation. The guy’s voice, killer. As in, jaw-dropping. He plays the guitar like it’s a part of him. But you know what will stand out for me?

The fact that he made you feel like we were all in this together. And I’ve missed that feeling so damn much.

—

Below are some recordings from the night. They are terrible quality, taken on my phone. But I’m enjoying reliving the night so much, I thought that some others who were there might too.

You know, there are few debut LPs that I’m more excited about SoKo’s forthcoming album, out later this year. In anticipation, I was listening to some tunes online tonight when I came back to the old faithful, “I’ll Kill Her”. It’s one of my favourite songs… well, ever.

It’s 5 years old now. But I never knew about this fan video. And holy heck, it just makes the whole experience something more. Anyway, posting for no other reason than it’s a cool tune, and a cool video that I never knew about. Screw breaking news, this is what I love about music blogging.

Hard to believe that it’s been over four years since I first wrote about Robert Francis on this blog, and even harder to believe that the dude still isn’t a household name.

Hopefully all that is about to change, with the release of his album, “Strangers in the First Place”, out May 22nd on Vanguard Records.

To celebrate the upcoming release, Robert and the folks over at Vanguard have put up a copy of “Some Things Never Change” for free download below, in exchange for giving them your email address. It’s an awesome song, but I’ll tell you what… the real story here is the live version of the tune that they’ve just released. Robert live absolutely kills it.

Watch the video – and have your heart broken – below, and if you dig, download the recorded version below that.

I remember back in the days when I lived in South Africa, we struggled to get good international acts to come out and play intimate gigs. No longer, it seems, as I’ve just come across this stunning recording of The Tallest Man on Earth playing a live show in South Africa, in one of my favourite cities: Cape Town.

The tune in question, Little Brother, is simply beautiful. Dare I say, it’s the favourite thing I’ve heard from Kristian Mattsson yet. And considering I’ve been writing about the guy for about four years now, that’s saying something.

Just beautiful. I wish I’d been there to hear it.

If watching the Grammys the other night made you nostalgic for the Beach Boys halcyon days, you’re not the only one. Yesterday, Pete Yorn share the below on his soundcloud account, saying:

“Watching last nights Grammy’s made me wanna share this with you….I recorded this (one of my all time favorite songs) a few months ago as part of a record of cover songs I’m putting together….perhaps you have seen me sing this song during past live shows…..this is SURFER GIRL….”

Turns out ol’ Pete has done a bloody fine job with this tune (one of my favourites). All crackly and warm, Brian and the boys would be proud. I’m pulling out my Beach Boys records right now, and looking forward to Pete’s covers album too.
