If you seriously can’t wait for the Decemberists’ next album, The King Is Dead,to hit shelves on January 18, Meloy and Co. have a little something to tide you over… a free (for the price of an email address) download of their first single, “Down by the Water“; which, by the way, features the always-lovely Gillian Welch.
“Down by the Water” is a welcome return from the band, following the underwhelming Hazards; on this track they’re back to doing what they’ve always done best: spinning a kick-ass, slightly dark yarn over some wonderful interplay between a mass of instruments. Bear in mind, traditionally people have either loved or hated Colin Meloy’s voice, so you have a 50/50 chance of loving this song.
I hope you love it though.

Alas, my old friend Mixwit is no longer, so I can’t embed this mixtape in a pretty package. But click the “play” icon next to the first track, and the tracks will play one after each other. Easy huh?
Probably the best thing Robert Smith’s produced in years, and the first time I’ve thanked Crystal Castles. Absolute heaven. This new version of “Not in Love” is the A-side of a single due out December 6 on Fiction.
I’ve written about William Fitzsimmons on this blog before, but it’s been a while since. It’s surprising that it’s a remix from Pink Ganter that’s brought me back to his stuff, but I’m glad it did.
Seriously, the moment the vocals kick in in this tune, you just know it’s going to be a beautiful, beautiful track. It’s shocking to think that both these girls are still not even twenty.
“You don’t know lonely at all…”. I was hooked right from the first refrain, and I’m seriously loving this tune. “Lonely” appears on Ragsy’s 2010 self-titled debut EP, which was released last month.
So for those of you who don’t know, Ryan Adams recently played at Judd Apatow’s “I Found This Funny” 826la.org benefit gig. It was Ryan’s first live performance in over a year and a half… and man, I’ve missed him.
Which is why I was unbelievably stoked when this footage of Ryan in pre-show rehearsals performing “Oh My Sweet Carolina” – aided by the oh-so-sweet tones of wife, Mandy Moore – surfaced on the internet.
