The Middle East – Land of the Bloody Unknown & Deep Water

Back in 2009, I first wrote about Townsville band, The Middle East, on these pages. At the time, their EP, “Recordings of The Middle East” – and in particular, their tune “The Darkest Side” – was one of the most exciting releases I had heard… especially from a band without even a full release under their belts.

Fast-forward to 2011, and after much anticipation, that debut full-length studio album has finally arrived.

I Want That You Are Always Happy is the debut album from The Middle East: a collection of songs recorded between Townsville, Texas & Cairns while the band toured internationally in 2010. Just released this week, it’s still early days with it, but after only a few spins, I can pretty much guarantee this will have a space on my “Best of 2011” list.

The release may not be what everyone is expecting, considering their earlier EP work. There’s definitely a lot more experimentation with out-and-out indie tunes, along with the chamber-pop, ethereal folk stuff that you would have expected. But it all works. Seriously. This is an album you have to listen to in its entirety, or you aren’t doing it right. From haunting, achingly beautiful sombre stuff, to upbeat melodies, this album is a journey more than anything else. And the journey’s more important than the destination.

Below is one of my favourite tracks off the album, “Land of the Bloody Unknown”, and below that you can stream “Deep Water”, 8 minutes of pure bliss that closes the album.

Listen. Love. Support.

Angela & Alex Dezen – Lullabies for Getty

Alex Dezen of The Damnwells and his wife, Angela, have released an album of lullabies… but as they’ve said, “lullabies aren’t just for babies anymore”.

All proceeds from “Sweet Water Child ~ Lullabies For Getty” will be donated to The Getty Owl Foundation, to help put an end to Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

You can download the album on their Bandcamp page for just $9.99, and you can stream it below. “Sleepright Dreamkeep” is a personal favourite of mine.

Death Cab for Cutie – You are a Tourist [VIDEO]

So, Death Cab just attempted the first-ever “live, scripted, single-take music video” for Codes And Keys lead single “You Are A Tourist.” And, wouldn’t you know it, with awesome choreography, light-up suits, and some seriously talented direction by Tim Nackashi, it’s actually turned into a bloody awesome video.

Codes and Keys is out May 31 (my birthday!) and can be preordered here.

Patrick Wolf – This City

Patrick Wolf

Yes, I know it’s been far too long since I last posted. And, to be honest, there are more than a few things that should have been up by now, not least of which is reviews of the new Damnwells and Hotels and Highways records.

But that will have to continue to wait. For now, I simply wanted to share this song with you. It may have been out for a few months already, but damned if I’m going to let that stand in my way. From the ever-intriguing Patrick Wolf, The City is the most ridiculously contagious fun-love song I have ever heard.

This City appears on Wolf’s upcoming album, Lupercalia, due out in May.

REM – Überlin [VIDEO]

Who knew the kid from Kick-Ass, Aaron Johnson, could boogie like this?

Although R.E.M had previously released a “lyrics video” version for Überlin, this piece, featuring Aaron Johnson casually strolling down London’s Brick Lane, is the official video. Directed by Aaron’s fiance, Sam Taylor-Wood, the clip is just one of several “specially commissioned films” for the album, which apparently includes two by the impossibly talented James Franco.

The Damnwells – The Great Unknown [VIDEO + MP3]

Alex Dezen

Continuing my reignited love with The Damnwells, I was super stoked to catch the premiere of their new music video for the song “The Great Unknown”; a new track from their upcoming record, No One Listens To The Band Anymore, out March 15.

Just as with Werewolves, the video is sparse to the point of being tongue in cheek… but it just seems to suit the tune like a glove. And man, Alex is rocking a great beard.

Thanks to Paste Magazine, you can download the mp3 of the song for free below.

Listen. Love. Support.

Radiohead – Lotus Flower [VIDEO]

So you know how Radiohead’s “King of Limbs” was supposed to launch tomorrow, February 19?

Yeah, turns out they got bored waiting. Because Thom and Co. have already released our first taste of the LP8 album on Youtube, with the video for first single “Lotus Flower”. Thom Yorke’s dancing just gets cooler and cooler…

The Strokes – Under Cover of Darkness

the strokes under cover of darkness

So, in case you hadn’t noticed, yesterday the Strokes released the first single off their “don’t call it a comeback” album, “Angles”, titled “Under Cover of Darkness”.

And hell if it isn’t nice to hear these cats again. “Under Cover of Darkness” is their first tune in over 5 years, and it’s a welcome return, with a decidedly upbeat, off-kilter feel, and an absolutely kickass chorus refrain melody.

You can download “Under Cover of Darkness” for free from the Strokes website (free in return for an email, and – less inviting – mobile number), or you can stream the full thing below.

“Angles” from The Strokes is out March, 2011.
