Marionette Music Videos

Over the last few months, two “Marionette Music Videos” were released that really caught my eye. The first was Josh Ritter‘s “The Curse”, and the second, Chris Garneau‘s “Dirty Night Clowns”.

Josh Ritter – The Curse

Josh Ritter‘s drummer, Liam Hurley, is a skilled marionette puppeteer… so of course, when it came to telling the bizarre love story that is Josh Ritter’s, “The Curse”, who better to take on the task than a puppeteer?

“The Curse” tells the tale of the love between an archeologist and her mummy. Seriously. And it’s absolutely heart-breaking.

Long ago on the ship, she asked “Why pyramids?”
He said “Think of them as an immense invitation”
She asks “Are you cursed?” He says “I think that I’m cured”
Then he kissed her and hoped that she’d forget that question
– Josh Ritter, “The Curse”

Chris Garneau – Dirty Night Clowns

I’ve been a Chris Garneau fan ever since I saw his cover of Eliott Smith’s, “Between the Bars”. But this release of his might be my favourite yet. An absolutely terrifying video, “Dirty Night Clowns” will leave you feeling unsettled at the very least. On a lighter note, I absolutely love the use of the skeletons as percussion in this tune.

I will never be dirt-free
Up the stairs, come find me
Come sneak up behind me
I’ll be sleeping soundly

– Chris Garneau, “Dirty Night Clowns”

The Tallest Man on Earth – “Love Is All” [VIDEO]

Like a house made from spider webs and the clouds rolling in
I bet this mighty river’s both my savior and my sin
Oh, my savior and my sin
– The Tallest Man On Earth, “Love Is All”

It’s been quite some time since I originally wrote about Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man on Earth on this blog. In fact, it was over two years ago. In the intervening time, I’ve probably only written about the guy a handful of times… but something about this video inspired me to post again.

Below is the official music video for “Love Is All”, a track found on Kristian’s “The Wild Hunt” LP that was released earlier this year.
Quite frankly, I’m just posting this because the video and tune are beautiful, and I wanted to share that with you.

Ryan Adams and Mandy Moore – Oh My Sweet Carolina [VIDEO]

So for those of you who don’t know, Ryan Adams recently played at Judd Apatow’s “I Found This Funny” 826la.org benefit gig. It was Ryan’s first live performance in over a year and a half… and man, I’ve missed him.

Which is why I was unbelievably stoked when this footage of Ryan in pre-show rehearsals performing “Oh My Sweet Carolina” – aided by the oh-so-sweet tones of wife, Mandy Moore – surfaced on the internet.

It’s a beautiful thing.

The National – Terrible Love (Alternate Version)

Proving yet again that the Berninger brothers are far more talented than any human beings should realistically be, The National have just released the video for “Terrible Love (Alternate Version)”, both filmed and directed by Tom Berninger, brother to the enigmatic frontman Matt. (thanks Shelagh P for the correction in the original post)

Shot both onstage and backstage at various live shows over the last year, the video offers an intimate look at the band… and does a pretty good job capturing not only the band’s intensity, but also the pure emotion they inspire.

‘Terrible Love’ is released as a violet-coloured 7″ and download single on Monday 22nd November, along with the expanded edition of High Violet.

The Chemist – Lullaby #1 (Mercy) [VIDEO]

Man, what a great music video from Perth lads, “The Chemist“. And there’s something about that line, “Mercy sleeps inside Love’s arms” that just really gets to me tonight.

Stick around for the full thing… that last minute of the tune just feels right.

Writing’s On The Wall – Plan B (Live at Cafe de Paris) [Video]

… for no other reason than it’s quite simply a “Ben Drew” kind of day.

A love letter to aKING

I’ve written about aKING here on Burgo’s Music Blog before. Heck, at the time (nearly 2 years ago!) I called them “South Africa’s next big thing. So why, you might ask yourself, am I devoting another blog post to this band from South Africa? Is it because they’ve released another album, or done something particularly noteworthy recently?

Well, ok, they have actually released another album since that last post, called “Against All Odds”.
And make no mistake about it, it’s a cracker of an album. But that album came out in 2009 and I’ve had my grubby hands on it then, so it’s hardly breaking news suitable for a post in 2010.

No, the whole reason behind this love letter to aKING is far more prosaic: it’s simply that, after a few months off, I came back to listening to aKING… and for two weeks now, they are all I’ve listened to. Seriously. I don’t listen to radio, so I haven’t heard anything coming over radiowaves. I listen to music at work, and at home through Spotify. And, for two weeks now, I haven’t moved off aKING’s page. It’s ridiculous.

So, I thought that an obsession like that simply deserved a post… even if there’s no real point to it, other than to say: Man, I never get tired of these dudes!

So, in case you missed their previous post, go check it out. And then come back here, and watch/listen to these tunes. I promise you, you won’t regret it.

aKING’s first single, “The Dance”. If anything, this song as a first single hurt them more than anything else. Its mainstream sound turned off some listeners. Their loss. From “Dutch Courage”.

aKING, “I Believe”. Off first release, “Dutch Courage”.

aKING, “Safe As Houses”. Off first release, “Dutch Courage”.

aKING, “You and I”. From new release (arguably their best), “Against All Odds”. Questionable video though.

You can listen to aKING’s two full releases, “Dutch Courage” and “Against All Odds” on Myspace Music. Do it now.

What do you think? Is this an unhealthy obsession? Sound off in the comments.

Farryl Purkiss – Kissing Devils On The Cheek (Video)

It’s been a while since I’ve written about super-nice dude Farryl Purkiss (see #8 on my “Top South African Bands” post for more details) on this blog… so it was purely happy chance that I came across his new video for “Kissing Devils on the Cheek” on Youtube the other day. It’s the kind of tune that grows on you, with each listen. Check it out…
